Southwark Music Service

Southwark Music aims to enrich the lives of all Southwark children and young people by making the learning of music dynamic, energetic, varied and fun.

Thanks for this. Always good to have an accessibility Spring clean. It’ll make a difference to our users.

Gordon Maguire, Head at Southwark Music

Website

Learning and playing music has never been so important in today’s fast-paced, always-on world that demands instant gratification. Southwark Music has a wonderful aim to enrich the lives of all Southwark children and young people by making the learning of music dynamic, energetic, varied and fun.

The website needed to be functional (for parents making payments for classes), inspiring to young people and parents alike, easy to update for busy staff members, but perhaps most importantly of all it needed to be accessible as the client is a body sitting within the public sector.

Inspired by sound waves, we used them as a motif throughout the design.

Accessibility

Southwark Music Service is a body that operates under Southwark Borough Council, which means it has an obligation to ensure its website conforms with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Thankfully, that is something Kindera both cares about and is an area where we have a lot of expertise.

The site was designed with accessibility in mind from the outset, with high contrast text, large touch areas, written in plain English, screenreader and keyboard user friendly, and numerous other quality markers. We squeezed as much work on accessibility as we could within the available budget and continue to make tweaks as we work on the website.
